Making an Appointment
Who's Eligible for Services?
All undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh are eligible to receive services at the Counseling Center. Services are free, voluntary, and confidential.
How Do I Make an Appointment?
Appointments may be arranged by calling 412 648-7930 or by dropping by 334 William Pitt Union. Our receptionists will ask you about the kind of counseling you are seeking (personal, couples, group) and will place you on an appropriate staff member's schedule. Appointments can normally be scheduled within a few days from your request but may take a few weeks during the Center's busiest times. Schedule adjustments are made, however, in emergency situations.
What Else Do I Need to Know?
With the exception of the Group Counseling Program, the Counseling Center's appointments are set up during the day on the hour and last fifty minutes. Monday and Wednesday evening appointments, available fall and spring terms only, start on the half hour. Appointments are normally scheduled between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. During the fall and spring semesters, a limited number of Monday and Wednesday evening appointments are available between 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Students often meet with their counselors on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis.
How Do I Get Started?
During your first meeting, a counselor will ask you to describe your concerns and what you would like to gain from counseling. Some students find that this initial appointment is all they need to explore and clarify their feelings and options. If you and your counselor decide that additional services would be beneficial, he or she will talk with you about how the Center can provide the kind of help you need and if individual therapy or group therapy would be most appropriate for you.
At Your First Appointment...
You and a counselor will discuss the issues that led you to schedule an appointment. The counselor will talk to you about how the Center is best able to provide the kind of help you need and which staff member would be most appropriate for you. When the Center is unable to provide the type of service you need or request, we will refer you to an appropriate outside agency and assist you in obtaining services there.
