Pre-Doctoral Internships

Letter from the Training Director The Setting The Training Program

Stipends & Benefits To Apply Staff Profiles

Letter from the Training Director

Dear Prospective Intern Applicant:

On behalf of the Training Committee and the entire staff of the University of Pittsburgh Counseling Center, thank you for your interest in our American Psychological Association accredited pre-doctoral internship site.

Our internship program has an apprenticeship model of training that emphasizes our valuing of a developmental perspective in the formation of professional identity as psychologists. This is accomplished primarily through supervised experience and didactic training in a supportive and challenging environment.

Our program is proud of its long history of diverse internship classes and senior staff. Celebration of diversity is interwoven throughout the training experience and is a cornerstone value of our center. Our client population represents the broad spectrum of human experience and varies in race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender, age, socio-economic class, physical ability, and religious affiliations. Our training staff represents diversity along many of these same characteristics.

Pittsburgh, with all of its little cultural neighborhoods, three rivers, and unique history, is an exciting place to live! Many people are surprised with all that Pittsburgh has to offer, and it is very affordable as well. If you are not familiar with Pittsburgh, please check out our section on the program's setting with information about the various neighborhoods and attractions, University of Pittsburgh, and our Counseling Center. We are also including the all-important section on Where the Staff Eats Lunch!

I am often asked at interviews what qualities we are looking for in our interns. We are looking for a diverse group of interns who share our Center's value of commitment to serving our student population. We are also looking for individuals who can both celebrate their strengths and be open to examining and discussing their growing edges as psychologists. We are hoping to have interns who are energized about becoming part of our Center's warm and caring community and building strong relationships with each other.

Our application deadline is November 06, 2009. At that time all applicants will be thoroughly reviewed for compatibility between background, training goals, and available training opportunities. Candidates assessed to be most closely compatible with the opportunities available in our program will be invited to participate in an interview either on campus or by telephone, whichever is most convenient to the applicant. Applicants who will be invited to interview will be notified by December 4, 2009 so that the most affordable travel arrangements can be made. We will be offering interview dates in mid-December and early January. We have constructed an interview experience that is designed to provide both parties with a clear idea of what the other will bring to the internship year. Our Center abides by all APPIC policies regarding the sharing of any ranking information prior to the Uniform Notification Day.

Once again, thank you for your interest in the University of Pittsburgh Counseling Center Pre-Doctoral Internship Training Program. Please do not hesitate to contact me at kevinb2@pitt.edu if you have questions about our site or the application process. I look forward to receiving your application materials.

Sincerely,

Kevin Bursley, PhD
Director of Training
